Soap vs. Skin: The Harsh Truth About Why Your Face Deserves Better

Proper facial care has a few essential steps, and if we follow them systematically—using products tailored to our skin type—we’re on our way to healthy, glowing skin. I’m a firm believer in consistency and individuality when it comes to skincare.

So, what are these golden rules? Cleansing, toning, nourishing, and moisturizing.

Today, let’s tackle step one: cleansing. Sounds simple, right? We wash our faces twice a day (hopefully), usually on autopilot, because… what’s there to think about? Turns out, quite a lot!

My Face-Washing Wake-UpCall

For years, I washed my face with good ol’ soap and water—mild, eco-friendly soaps, of course—thinking I was doing something great for my skin. That is, until my face started feeling like a desert, with dry, burning patches showing up uninvited.

At the time, I was all about organic, natural skincare. So why was my skin freaking out? A trip to my dermatologist changed everything. He handed me a list of pharmacy-recommended cleansers, and well… let’s just say I’ve been a loyal fan ever since.

Why Cleansing Matters

Washing your face isn’t just about removing makeup—it clears away dirt, SPF, excess oil, and product buildup, prepping your skin for the next steps. If you want smooth, happy skin, proper cleansing is non-negotiable.

Choosing the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type

Not all face washes are created equal, and finding the one depends on your skin’s needs:

  • Gels → Best for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin.
  • Foams → Great for sensitive, dry, or redness-prone skin.
  • Emulsions → Suitable for all skin types, but since they’re often packed with moisturizing ingredients, they can leave a film on the skin—something oily or acne-prone skin types might not love.

Why Regular Soap is a No-Go

So, why did my beloved soap betray me? The pH level, my friend. Regular soap isn’t made for facial skin and can raise its pH, damaging its protective barrier. This leads to dryness, irritation, and even skin conditions. While healthy facial skin has a pH of 4.5 to 5.5, most soaps range from 8.5 to 10—a huge difference!

Your Skin Will Thank You

Once you find your ideal cleanser, washing your face won’t feel like a chore—it’ll be a little daily luxury. Your skin will feel refreshed, balanced, and perfectly prepped for the rest of your routine. Trust me, your future glow will thank you.
